On a cruise to Finland you can check out the wonderful city of Helsinki. The most common reason to stop off at Helsinki is if it is part of a longer cruise around all of the Baltic perhaps beginning in Sweden and carrying on to Finland, various Baltic islands, and then stopping or turning around in Tallinn, Estonia. It is of course Helsinki though where you will be likely to have the most fun and find a city that you'll really fall in love with.
From the comfort of a cruise ship, knowing that there's always going to be a comfortable bed for you to return to, Helsinki is an even better place to head to. It's like the Roman empire era Italy, or perhaps Ancient Greek architecture combined with the Russian influence to the country of Finland's geographic east. With an incredible 80 museums you'll be able to really get a sense of the nation's culture from ancient times, with its ancient tribes, through to modern times of wealth, with Finland often top of education tables and happiness indexes. You'll see exactly why.
While you are on a shore-excursion to Helsinki you should also be sure to check out the Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress. It is one of Finland's few UNESCO heritage sites and though Finland hasn't had to put it to much use lately and your cruise ship will have little trouble getting through the fortresses now very old defences, it's a must visit for all cruisers that head to Helsinki. It's especially good for children. First of all, there isn't far that they can run away, so you can just let them go and play around the fortress and play at being Viking invaders perhaps.
With a big network of tunnels, the fortress is an excellent place for even adults to head to in order for them to learn a little something about the history of Finland and its impressive naval history and culture. Another couple of good places to visit in Helsinki is the Senate Square the real heart of the city where the Cathedral, University and the Government palace are to be found. With a really relaxed atmosphere, Helsinki is the perfect city from which to enjoy a short break while on a shore-excursion.
As a very small city it's perfect because you can see all of the city in a very short amount of time.
