Storm from the south causing further travel misery

Edmonton Grandmother

States in the southeast of the country are suffering from a strong winter storm which is gradually disrupting flights. Delta Airlines, who operates many of its flights from Atlanta, have cancelled five flights today.

Meteorologists are predicting Atlanta and Georgia will be amongst the worst hit, and hundreds of flights in total have been cancelled at Atlanta International Airport. Overall, Delta has axed 1,400 flights between Sunday and today, while AirTran has removed nearly 300 itineraries from his listings. AirTran have advised passengers that they may change their flight itineraries without penalty – passengers travelling on any airline in the region should check with their operator online for the latest flight cancellations and amendments.

Snow is likely to fall heavily in a number of states – Georgia and Tennessee could receive as much as six inches, while some areas of Mississippi may receive up to nine inches. Severe weather warnings have been issued from Texas to the southernmost states. Drivers have been urged to avoid non-essential travel as many of the interstate road surfaces are likely to be frozen over. Interstate 20 in particular has been classed as dangerous.

The bad weather has been predicted to push northwards and it is not clear when it is due to end, though it is almost certain that further flight disruptions will come over the course of the week.
