Colorado State University released a statement to Reuters today which points to a heightened Atlantic hurricane season this year. Staff at the University are predicting a “above-average” season for 2011, with around 16 named storms in total.

The University also stated that 9 of these 16 storms will be become hurricanes, with 5 of those being major.

In comparison, the average Atlantic hurricane season has around 10 tropical storms with six hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

The Forecaster Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), based in the UK, has posted similar albeit lower numbers at 14 tropical storms for the season, with around 7 or 8 becoming hurricanes. AccuWeather.com meteorologists have put the number of tropical storms at 15 but with the same number of hurricanes and major hurricanes.
