Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992 because of its endangered animal population and a vast forest ecosystem, the Yellow Dragon Scenic Area, also known as Huanglong, takes its name from the calcium-carbonate sediment whose glowing sediment makes it look as if a yellow dragon is slowly making its way through the valley. Home to the Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkey and the giant panda as well as many other rare and beautiful species, the 270 square-meter park is situated in the northwestern region of the Sichuan Province. Beyond its stunning valley lie thundering waterfalls, steaming hot springs, snow-covered mountains, primeval forests and scenic gorges.
