Eivissa, commonly known as Ibiza to most English speakers, is the third largest of the Balearic Islands. Until the 1960s, the neighboring island of Majorca drew all the crowds, but after the Europeans discovered Ibiza's laid-back charm and pristine beaches, it became a major mecca for tourists seeking sun and fun. Today, more than a million visitors a year flock to Ibiza and construction and tourism have taken over the old economic pillars of farming and agriculture. Known for its wild parties, soft drugs and hard sex, Ibiza attracts an unsual mixture of fashionistas, nudists, flower children, package tourists and nightclubbers--largely from the UK, France, Germany and Scandinavia. Teeming with nightclubs and bars, Ibiza offers plenty of entertainment for those seeking a good party. If you're more interested in escaping the crowds, it is still possible to find some quiet corners on the 585 sqare kilometer (225 sq. miles) island. Its jagged coastline is dotted with fine beaches, secluded bays, majestic cliffs, and whitewashed houses. Fig and olive trees abound, and the weather is good all year, although July and August are usually sweltering.
