Not much has changed in Cancun's stunning landscape since the Mexican government decided to develop its infastructure for tourism back in the early 1970s. Still a gorgeous locale with pristine beaches, azure waters, and plenty of amenities, this seaside resort attracts over three million visitors annually, largely from the United States. Located in Mexico's easternmost state of Quintana Roo, Cancun's beaches are lined with all-inclusive resorts, lively restaurants and laid-back bars. Convenient to reach by flight, Cancun has all the modern amenities anyone could want. In fact, some tourists complain that it's not much different from an American beach resort. That's true in some ways--dollars are accepted and English is widely spoken--but you certainly won't find Mayan ruins and remnants of 1,000 years of history in any American beach town. Nearby Islas Mujeres (Island of women) offers a more authentic Mexican flavor, but if you're looking for sun, fun, sand, margaritas and mega-resorts, look no further than Cancun. If you get tired of lying on a towel, there's plenty to see, do and eat. Take a jungle tour, go snorkeling in crystalline waters, swim with dolphins, or visit the popular ecological theme park nearby. World-class dining, bustling nightlife and luxury accomodations as well as duty-free shopping and outdoor activities make Cancun a prime beach vacation destination.
